10 more days…

Posted by Sanya | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 31-12-2009

Shawn was seen at the clinic yesterday morning and since most of the city is without power it wasn’t crowded at all.  So we were in and out rather quickly.  His counts were 1500 which we took full advantage of after he got his chemo.  He did great through the entire visit.  He didn’t cry or fuss while getting his finger pricked and I am hoping we have reached that threshold of not thrashing about and getting upset.  He holds his breath and his eyes get really big!!  He also was very coroperative with nurse Francis in getting his port accessed.  He was so brave and even said…”I wish that sissy and Ashley could see me this brave!”  They increased his dose of methotrexate and has tollerated it so far.  Other than having diarhea and he did get sick tonight.  If you are eatting, don’t read this part… We are all sitting around the kitchen table and eatting dinner.  Shawn is chewing his steak (which I don’t claim to cook steak very well other than on the grill!) and says it is good.  He chewed and chewed and then got sick right on the table.  You know when you have reached that new level of tollerance in the family when Alyssa and Ashley just sit and giggle a little then go about thier buisness of finishing thier dinner.  I am serious!!  I got him cleaned up, cleaned the bathroom and Justin took care of the little mess on the table.  By the time I got back to the table… the food was all gone!  The girls had finished it.  I am trying not to take it personal and Justin keeps trying to reassure me that the steak was good… but now I have my doubts! LOL

We took Shawn out to lunch yesterday as a family.  We ate at a Japanese steak house and he wanted shrimp.  So he and I split it.  He LOVED seeing them cook right in front of him and after taking his first bite of his shrimp (stuffed the whole thing in his mouth) he gave the cook a thumbs up!  It was cute.  He kept thanking us for taking him to that yummy resturaunt.  We then headed to Toys R Us and it wasn’t crowded either.  I can’t begin to tell you how wonderful it was to be able to take Shawn out with the whole family.  It will be short lived I am sure as his docs said that the chemo should knock his counts back down pretty quick.

10 more days…

UPDATE 1/23/09

Posted by Sanya | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 23-12-2009

Just got off the phone with Dr. Raj and the test we have been waiting on came back with quote “marked improvement” but… it still isn’t low enough.  The MRD dropped to 0.07 and it needs to be at 0.01 or below.  So we will continue on the current treatments and repeat the bone marrow biopsy again in 4 weeks.  For now the transplant is on hold.

So we got some good news (and I am thrilled!!) and some bad.  Baby steps…

Lots of Love,

Sanya

Update

Posted by Sanya | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 18-10-2009

Just a quick update. Shawn goes back tomorrow (Feb. 18th) for his bone marrow biopsy, chemo and spinal. Praying for the MRD to be less than it was last time (0.07). He has been feeling great and enjoying his time off. He hasn’t been as sick as he has been so that is a nice change. I will update after tomorrow!

Have a great week everyone!

P.S.  We have been using a Caringbridge site as well.  We have a lot of families that we have met that are going through the same thing or similar to what Shawn is going through.  So we keep in contact with then that way.  I usually update both sites with the same stuff… but just wanted to let you know it was out there.  Here is the link: http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/shawnbowen

Sorry for the delay in updating. I took Shawn in to see Dr. Raj on Tuesday as he is still having trouble with vomiting and has broken out with a rash on both legs. Dr. thinks they are both chemo related. The Zantac seems to be helping. Hoping it stays that way.

Dr. Raj said that he was glad about the MRD results (0.014) and talked with the study chair. They both agree they really don’t know what to do with the results. They just don’t have the data or studies to back it up. So he is emailing other oncologist through out the country and will let me know what they decide to do. Most likely won’t hear anything until the next bone marrow which will be done about 4 weeks after the next round of chemo is started. He should start that round mid March. Dr. Raj also said that Shawn is on some pretty heavy duty chemo as it is.

As usual… a constant roller coaster. Will update as we find more out. Shawn goes back for more chemo on Friday.

On a good note. He has had a lot of energy lately. We were able to hit ChuckE Cheese and he got to see his sisters play basketball over the weekend. We also got his eyes checked along with his sisters and myself. All three kids did great. Shawn does have a stigmatism, but they don’t want to do anything about it right now. Thank goodness. I need a small prescription. Haven’t filled it yet though. Shawn picked out some fruits (blueberries and strawberries) while at Sams Club. I won’t deny him food! LOL. He needs to gain some weight.

We are participating in the St. Baldricks event at 4th Street Live on March 15th. Shawn’s Dad, a uncle or two, and one of his cousins are going to shave their heads in Shawn’s honor. If you would like to participate, please see Shawn’s page http://www.stbaldricks.org/kids/kid_info.php?KidID=1857 , or email me at sanyab@insightbb.com

One more thing… we just found out tonight that one of Shawn’s little buddies from the hospital and clinic relapsed. He has been diagnosed with AML. Please pray for him and his family. David is a fighter. He is 5 years old as well.

Thanks for the reading this far!

April Update

Posted by Sanya | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 26-05-2009

I a sorry that I don’t update this site as often as I should.  I have been slacking.  I will try to be better about it… Shawn also has a Caringbridge site http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/shawnbowen and I encourage you to visit it.  I have been using it (cause I lost the logging in information for this site) a lot lately and most of the kids up at Kosairs use them so we can all keep in touch that way.

Here is the latest… He is back at Kosairs…

Just a quick update.  Shawn is not feeling well at all.  Not eatting or drinking.  We keep encouraging

him to at least drink so he can stay off of the IV fluids, but I am almost positive he will be on them by this evening.  His hemoglobin was low again today so he is getting a transfusion as we speak.  He also just had a chest x-ray since his cough isn’t getting any better.  Better to be safe than sorry.  ANC was 296 today.  Doctor is thinking it could be viral and would explain the sudden drop, but is keeping him since he is not feeling any better.  Still running fevers.
He has very little energy.  Just watching tv, lying in bed and playing on the Wii.  Maybe this blood transfusion will get him feeling better.  The plan is to continue his chemotherapy tomorrow since he missed his last dose that was due on Saturday.
Will let you know if anything changes.
Again, please check his Caringbridge site if it has been awhile since I updated on here.

1/19/09 Update

Posted by Sanya | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 20-05-2009

Hello again!

Shawn had his clinic appointment today and his counts were barely high enough (760) to have his bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture and chemo today. We had thought he wasn’t going to have any of it done because his counts have been rising so slowly. There was some debate among the doctors and nurse practitioner, but they finally decided that they should proceed. So, we spent a good part of the day at the clinic and hospital. I am hoping he doesn’t have many side effects. We should have the results of his bone marrow biopsy (they send it out) by Friday. I am hesitant as to what I want the test to reveal. At first I didn’t want him to have a bone marrow transplant. However I was told by a friend of ours who has a daughter who will be having transplant that they will be done with chemotherapy. So that prompted me to ask one of the nurses at the clinic and she confirmed that. So, would it be better for him to have transplant and be done with this disease?

But there is a down side to that I suppose. The recovery is long and often there are complications and set backs.

On the other hand, should we continue with the chemotherapy? 3 years and 3 more months of this??

I have placed it in the Lord’s hands and I know that he is in control. You know me though! I am always worrying or trying to figure things out.

Please just pray that our doctors weigh everything and that we are heading in the right direction. Whatever that may be!

Tomorrow Shawn goes back for more chemo (leg shots) and then he will be off for 10 days. I know tomorrow will be rough for him because these shots hurt and he often gets sick from them. I just hope he feels fine the 10 days he is off!!

Have a great week everyone!

NEGATIVE!! YAY!!

Shawn’s blood culture results (24 hour test) came back negative! One small victory down!  Thank you for all your prayers!  They worked!

In the hospital

Posted by Sanya | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 05-04-2009

We have been here since early Monday morning (2:30am).  Shawn is running a fever off and on, but all tests are coming back normal or negative.  Docs feel it is viral so they were going to send him home today.  I pushed to have him stay because he isn’t feeling well, runs high fevers and isn’t eating or drinking much at all.  His counts have dropped from Monday right at 3000, yesterday 1050 and today in the 800s today.

May go home tomorrow and be seen in the clinic on Friday.

Will update later.  Got to get Shawn to sleep.

Shawn had a clinic appointment this morning. His counts were at 1500 (they were 1200 on Friday after lots of throwing up), and everything number wise looked great. Shawn is vomiting a lot lately. So I took him in on Friday and he was given IV fluids and IV meds to help with the vomiting. It hasn’t really helped. He got through Saturday without throwing up, but started again yesterday. Then today he got another round of chemotherapy and as soon as she started giving him the methotrexate he got sick right after. I am wondering if he is just getting too high of a dose and his little body just can’t handle it. I am going to ask at his next appointment. He goes back to the hospital (OMO) for more chemo… the dreaded leg shots!! He ALWAYS gets sick after it so I am not looking forward to this rest of the week.

My little man is such a fighter though! So brave and strong.

Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers.

We love you all!

Sanya

Quick thoughts…

Posted by Sanya | Posted in Uncategorized | Posted on 21-01-2009

Just a quick update. Shawn had his second dose of chemo today at OMO. He did well. It was the PEG (leg shots) and he usually gets pretty ill after having it so I expect he will have some vomiting in the next day or so. Two things that I forgot to mention yesterday was that he has started a new phase of his chemotherapy *AUGMENTED INTERM MAITINENCE* and 2nd is that he has chemo every 9-10 days instead of every week. This new phase will take us through March and possibly April if his bone marrow biopsy comes back clean.

So we won’t be back in the clinic and OMO until the 29th and I will update again once we get his bone marrow biopsy results!

Lots of Love,

Sanya
